"Abert's Squirrel" 5" X 7" pastel on pastelbord

Abert's Squirrel (pastel)

My husband and I were in northern Arizona several years ago
trying to escape the 110 degree heat that late June sometimes brings.

We stayed for sometime exploring and enjoying the cooler air.
There is a lot of forest land in that area
so we went on picnics and hikes whenever we could.

One place we visited was a Ranger's Center
where one can get all sorts of information on fishing, boating and
hiking. My husband regularly carries his camera, and was able to get
several shots of this little guy, an Abert's Squirrel.

The fact we were standing about three
feet from him didn't bother his lunch at all. He didn't want to
give up any of the sunflower seeds in the feeder.

  1. What a wonderful squirrel he is, too. His eye is bright and his ears are perfect... but it is that marvelous tail which makes me think it will flick any moment. So REAL! Hope you enjoyed doing him as much as i enjoy looking at him.

  3. Wow Carol, wonderful squirrel. All the details are spot on and I swear I can almost see him twitching as they often do. I do believe your's is the best painting of a squirrel I've ever seen. Enjoy the weekend.

    1. Thank you, Jane. We seem to see squirrels wherever we go. There are many in the forests, but they're at the beach, too. They can get a little feisty at times so people are careful when feeding them. Hope all is well with you, and you are having a good summer!

    1. I give credit for the pose to my husband who carries a camera almost everywhere. He seems to get his animal photos while they are in a good position, or doing some activity like eating. The little squirrel was certainly not bothered by us standing close to him.
Hope your vacation was a great one. Nice to have you back!
