It looks like I've been on a tomato kick for awhile with the last two posts. I enjoy painting tomatoes with their different shades of reds, oranges and greens. I painted the shapes of the tomatoes first and let them dry. Then, I began to glaze them using thin coats of paint and linseed oil.
I struggled with the glass jar big time trying to get the glass to "relax" and not be so stiff-looking. I think it'll take more practice to master that skill, so I'll see what other things I can put in a glass jar. Marbles? Golf balls? Candy?
The photo came from Morguefile, a source of free photos given with permission for an artist to paint and use commercially if they wish. I've found several on the site that are inspiring.
This will be available at auction on DailyPaintworks beginning Tuesday, December 2nd.
Here is a LINK.
Oh I think you master the transparence very well, this is really beautiful Carol. A great composition, and really , there is no end to what you could put into a jar. Looking forward to seeing the next !
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jane. I really do need to do more jars for practice. I think the rim at the top should be a bit elliptical, don't you think? Thanks for writing!!!
DeleteThe best part is the glass and how you lined the edges of the tomatoes with the edge of the inside - having the sheen of the glass break up the exactness of it all. I will look forward to a series of these. A holiday themed one maybe?
ReplyDeleteI like that idea, Julie. Maybe Christmas ball ornaments? Forgive me, I'm thinking out loud! I agree that the jar reflections do create more of a vague impression for the tomatoes inside. Hopefully, that implies the appearance of glass, too. I appreciate your comments!
DeleteLOVE, LOVE the glass jar, Carol! and the little cherry tomatoes are so well painted. I love all the colors and the shading...excellent work... I agree...Holiday ornaments in the jar would be wonderful for your next painting...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hilda! You're very generous and kind. I think Christmas ornaments would be a fun thing, too. Hope all is well with you in the northeast. I know it's December, but the heavy snow and cold weather has been a lot for those affected. Take care!
DeleteI think you did really well here! The tomatoes look wonderful and I marvel at your ability to paint glass. That takes some real observation and skill. It's a pretty combination of colors and surfaces.
ReplyDeleteLibby, thank you so much! I'm glad you like it. I'm still staring at it on my counter wondering if a few more strokes on the glass would help or hinder. It certainly has been fun to watch your efforts recently with the palette knife. Don't you love the feel of pushing and pulling the paint around?!
DeleteGlass isn't the easiest of subjects, but I like the way it distorts the contents. Love the combination of red and green, makes both colours zing.
ReplyDeleteHi Diana! I intend to do more practice with glass in paintings. I've seen some beautiful renderings of glass in others' work, so hopefully my skills will improve. Ahhhh, so much to learn! :)
DeleteThis is such a lovely painting Carol. You've handled the glass jar so well and the tomatoes really 'ping' against the green background. Terrific choice of subject!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Helen, for your kind words. I like tomatoes for subjects! All that juicy red color! The painting of the chef you just posted really stole my heart! What vibrant color and gorgeous light!
DeleteDear Carol - these tomatoes look absolutely delicious and I love the green compliment in the background. Just really makes those tomatoes glow. Hope you are having a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, thank you for your comment! Red and green is my number one favorite complement pair. They just seem to enhance the other. I've noticed that nature has so much of it as well in leaves and grasses, etc. Hope your holiday is filled with many blessings!
DeleteHappy Holidays, Carol! Finally had a minute to check in on your blog and see all the beautiful work I've missed! I also really enjoyed reading your bio/commentary for your blog hop and seeing the work of your fellow artists. I will check them out. Thanks so much for the best comment ever on my blog!
ReplyDeleteLorraine, the best to you this holiday season! Thank you for your delightful comments. I've been wondering if you've already had your show, and, if so, how did it go? If I had a private jet you can bet I would have been there for the opening! Would love to see your wonderful work in person!! If it's yet to come perhaps I'll get to read about it on your blog!
