From the Terrace 8" X 8" oil on canvasboard

One of the delights of this area is the many varieties of birds who live here or travel here seasonally. This little guy lives around the corner from us - one of many kinds of Flickers. I called these birds woodpeckers for the longest time because they are very much alike in appearance and habits. Both kinds will peck out a section of a Saguaro cactus and build a nest inside the hole for their eggs. When they're finished with it, the starlings arrive and take it over. Sort of like a vacation rental. Seems to work well!

    1. Thank you, Hilda. Yes, some of these saguaros have multiple holes and multiple families. I can imagine the noise when the babies arrive and they're all so busy!

  3. Well, I just love these colors a lot! And capturing the cactus was no easy act-I have some photos I took of cacti in Palm Springs and I haven't quite worked out how to handle them. And lastly, your little guy is so sweet! I love his little expression but his eyes are what appeal so much. You always manage to get those just right:)

    1. You are very generous, Libby, with your kind words. I greatly appreciate it! I hope you do find an opportunity to paint the cactus you photographed. They're lots of fun to do with their shapes and colors and shadows.

  4. So striking, Carol! Love the way you abstracted the cactus and distilled it down to shapes, and love the richness of your textures.

  5. Great color and love the cactus texture and overall impact on this piece. I used to love seeing the birds peek out of their cactus homes and the doves as well that build between the cactus arms, a prickly affair I am sure
