Baby Owl 8" X 8" pastel on Wallis paper SOLD

This baby Great Horned Owl is one of many that makes their Spring/Summer home in this area. The parents  come every year and have up to three chicks. The big danger to them is falling out of the nest which may be in a tree, a barn or some other high place. They seem to be very curious as they stare at what's below or they may sleep often during the day to get ready for the night's activities. We often lay in bed at night and hear them as they call to one another.

This painting is available in an auction. Click here.

    1. Thanks so much, Hilda. As you know, Wallis paper is great help for texture. It's sanded surface gives kind of a mottled look.

  2. They are so cute when they are fuzzy looking like that:) Nice job with finding some different colors-the purple especially-and I like the effect you made to get the feathers looking just right. Very nice and natural looking "portrait!"

    1. Libby, thank you for your kind words. Clair took the photo of the owlet in the tree one morning on his walk. It's always a thrill to see something like that.

  3. What am amazing and beautiful pastel. Your work is amazing, Carol.
Owls make me think of my father who collected them in shapes and sizes. He would have adored this one - I know he would.

  4. What a cutie! (If you can say that for an owl.) You captured the feather fluff perfectly.

    1. Hi, Melanie. I appreciate your comments! I think they're cute, also. They may be young, but they have those huge eyes which don't miss a thing!

  5. The colorings and capturing of the weird feathers of this young guy are superb. The control of the delicate edges and overall character capture this owlette beautifully
