This painting was done on Pastelmat paper which I haven't used a great deal. I loved the way the pastel went on and left a texture I thought was interesting. It takes detail well, and it allows for sufficient layers of pastel. It's exciting to try different surfaces occasionally.

Yes, it is, Libby. Liquid can't be used on this surface as in underpainting, but it has many good qualities. Whether one likes soft edges or hard edges this paper does well with both.

DeleteLike the composition of this the foreground apple stem brings you in and then back. The soft foreground is a unique way of handling this.

DeleteIt amazing to me how much difference the surface makes to the painter. And I think that is especially true of pastels. I really like the rich depth of color you have in this one. Perhaps achieved because of the substrate used?

ReplyDeleteSometimes, you wish to emphasize a rough texture. Another time a softer look. There are so many wonderful surfaces out there. Each has good attributes.
Carol, I have been waiting to paint apples for over a week , came home and here are your delicious, want to eat them apples, hope I can come close to your color and texture when I attempt mine. Love pastelmat.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your comment, Vanessa. I do hope you will have a chance to use Pastelmat. Don't press too hard in sketching your subject onto the Pastelmat. It has a tendency to leave "ditches" where you put the lines that are very hard to go over and cover. I press softly, after I learned the hard way. Other than that, it's a wonderful surface.

ReplyDeleteHow nice of you, Julie, to comment on my apples. The light is quite subdued in this one, and that is what drew me to it. Light is so crucial to every painting, and when it's a bit "extreme" or "different" it becomes a fun challenge.
