"Long Shadows" 6" X 8" pastel on Wallis paper

Pears have always been such a pleasure to paint. I think I started
with a pear composition many years ago,
and I still fall back on them as a
subject every now and then.

Photographing them is yet another story.
Pastel is such a pleasant medium to paint with for many reasons.
But is has a granular tendency which makes it quite hard to
photograph. The result is sometimes "fuzzy" or unfocused. Even with
the best lighting situation it often is a challenge to
make it as exacting as possible.

I very much enjoyed working on the shadows of this trio.
They each had a super dark portion and a softer
section which allowed me to play
with the colors included on the pears.

  1. Really nice work, Carol. The very interesting shape of the long shadows and wonderful color make this just lovely. I understand about problems of photographing artwork. Even in oil, the photos never really do justice to the original painting!

    1. Thank you, Susan. When I saw the photo I was excited to work on the shadows. These are particularly long because of the lighting, and I couldn't wait to fill them with colors used elsewhere in the painting. I do love your new painting. I love the many colors you put in the skin tones. I love how you insert humor into them as well.

    1. What a compliment, Diana. I keep trying with the camera so maybe I'll get the correct combination one of these days. Loved your newest painting with the enameled pieces. I'm forever enthralled with your skills, my friend.

  4. What WONDERFUL color transitions in the pears and shadows. Wow! I have never been able to take a really good photo unless I use my Nikon and tripod.

    1. Thanks, Hilda. I had to smile at your comment about Wallis paper. When Wallis was on the market I bought a good amount for future use. Then when Uart came out I liked that and Pastelmat so much. I've just about used all of the Wallis paper so I'm happy there are new choices of quality paper about. Enjoy your week!
