Promenade Oil on board 9" X 12"

I love this time of year and through
the Fall as produce begins to ripen and is showcased so beautifully in
grocery stores and produce stands.

One of my favorites is the little cherry tomatoes
that you can easily down in one or two bites. They are vividly
colorful, and they provide the artist an opportunity to
blend analogous colors ( reds, oranges, and yellows) and
complementary colors (reds and greens.)

For more fun
the green tops which can go in sometimes comedic directions
offer another opportunity to be creative.

I find at times that reds are difficult to photograph.
The camera wants to merge the different values of reds into
a single value. So sometimes  it's hard to pick up the subtleties
of each hue. With a little photo editing I think the true colors came through in the
tomatoes, the vine and other greenery.

Although the background appears white it is actually a
very soft, pale, warm yellow which I worked and worked over again to try to match and couldn't quite get it.
Just think white corn or platinum blonde and you have the background color!

I hope your week is wonderful and you'll see all the beauty around you!!

  1. Carol,

You certainly captured the structure of the tomatoes beautifully. They are funny looking little things though with those stems aren't they? I find them to have little "personalities!"

Hope you are having a good weekend:)

    1. Thank you, Libby! I really enjoyed painting these little guys particularly playing with the reds, oranges, golds, and warms and cools. Yes, I, too, think they display personalities. Makes me laugh sometimes.

    1. Sandra, how nice of you to comment! It was a fun piece to paint. I think next time I'll play with tomatoes on some sort of a patterned tablecloth or placemat. It seems like a pattern of some kind would add some interest, don't you think?

  4. They definitely look good enough to eat! Photographing and matching the colours on your screen to your painting is sometimes really time consuming and frustrating.

    1. I'm glad I'm not alone in that feeling. It IS time consuming. But, we do the best we can, right? Thank you for your kind comment. "Good enough to eat" is how I had hoped they'd be. ;)

  9. What a fabulous painting of tomatoes, Carol.. So unique ...and I think your choice of the platinum background color gives a sophisticated simplicity to the whole painting.
I agree about taking a photo and red. A real trouble maker. Blue can be the same way.

    1. I had a great time working this one, Julie. In hindsight I should have put the tomatoes INTO a scene of some kind. Another time. I admire your ability to create beautiful still life settings with pieces that have special meaning for you. You create a "story" with your setups which adds additional interest.

  10. Another beauty! The variety in your reds is very evident against the stark background. You shot it very well. Love the simplicity of the composition and the title!

    1. I appreciate your comments so much! As for the title, all I could see when I finished was an old-time dance scene where like the Virginia Reel had two lines of paired dancers. When I was a kid our P.E. teacher did a unit on old-time dancing, and we went through and tried to learn several of the dances. Good exercise, and FUN! It's so good to hear from you, and I hope things are well with you!
