"Two Delicious" 6" X 8" Pastel

This painting was done on Pastelmat paper which I haven't used a great deal. I loved the way the pastel went on and left a texture I thought was interesting. It takes detail well, and it allows for sufficient layers of pastel. It's exciting to try different surfaces occasionally.

  1. Love the lighting! Very dramatic:)

It is fun to try new surfaces isn't it? This paper sounds ideal for pastels.

    1. Yes, it is, Libby. Liquid can't be used on this surface as in underpainting, but it has many good qualities. Whether one likes soft edges or hard edges this paper does well with both.

    1. Thank you, Hilda. Your work is beyond amazing! I've always admired the soft quality of your portraits and the detail you render in your other subjects. What a talent you have!

  3. Like the composition of this the foreground apple stem brings you in and then back. The soft foreground is a unique way of handling this.

  4. It amazing to me how much difference the surface makes to the painter. And I think that is especially true of pastels. I really like the rich depth of color you have in this one. Perhaps achieved because of the substrate used?

  5. I agree. The surface makes a big difference in color and in texture.
Sometimes, you wish to emphasize a rough texture. Another time a softer look. There are so many wonderful surfaces out there. Each has good attributes.

    1. That's exciting as I love it when the same subject is approached differently. Cannot wait for you to post!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment, Vanessa. I do hope you will have a chance to use Pastelmat. Don't press too hard in sketching your subject onto the Pastelmat. It has a tendency to leave "ditches" where you put the lines that are very hard to go over and cover. I press softly, after I learned the hard way. Other than that, it's a wonderful surface.

  8. This is a wonderful painting, Carol. Your light is perfect and I love the way the color peeks through the spaces in-between the leaves.

    1. How nice of you, Julie, to comment on my apples. The light is quite subdued in this one, and that is what drew me to it. Light is so crucial to every painting, and when it's a bit "extreme" or "different" it becomes a fun challenge.
