"CARNATION REFLECTIONS" 6" X 6" Pastel on Pastelbord

It's been awhile since I worked in pastel rather than oil, and I had just received a recent order of 6" X 6" Pastelbords. Since the surface was white I did an underpainting of pastel and alcohol first to keep little spots of white from showing through the painting, then laid the softer pastels on top. I was reminded again why I like pastel so much as a medium - the blending and the immediacy of the colors, the textures you can create, and the instant drying time.

  2. Thank you, Jean. It was fun to do, and I realized how much I missed pastel. Will try to do more in the future along with oil.

  3. Beautiful colors, Carol, and a lovely fluid effect! I've tried pastels again recently and it's a lot harder than it looks. What I recall liking about the medium is that it also engages drawing skills and yours are considerable.

  4. Lorraine, that's GREAT that you're working in pastels for a while. I hope you will post work that you do. I'd love to see how you work with the texture element in pastels - I have so enjoyed seeing how you hand texture in your oils!

  5. Beautiful painting Carol, I just started using pastel, and am as enthusiastic as you. Very interesting how you first did an underpainting.

  10. Thank you, Ellie, for such a nice comment. Isn't pastel wonderful for the colors it offers? As we've said before...just like a candy store!
