"NEWTON'S FALLOUT" 6" X 6" Oil SOLD

Those of you who have seen my work know that this style of painting for me is definitely a "new frontier" area. I have been trying to paint in a looser style for quite some time now. The transition has been very hard for me. You have heard me mention before a wonderful artist whose works I admire greatly, Lorraine Shirkus . She, too, has been working toward "freer" paintings, and I'm in awe every time I look at her art. What she does with texture and lost edges is exciting. While her color usage is phenomenal I have a long way to go in that area. She uses a lot of neutrals to emphasize the bold colors she likes. Her skills are certainly something to aspire to. As for my humble efforts here, I'm still digesting the results, and at this point all I know is that it was loads of fun to do.

  1. This is beautiful, Carol! It does remind me of Lorraine's style. I really like the textures you achieved in the background. Beautiful brushstrokes, too. Very nice!

  4. Appreciate your comments very much, Virginia. I've always wanted to "play" with oil paint, to feel the "squooshiness" and move it here and there. It was a very tactile experience and very enjoyable.

  5. Rhonda, thank you for all your encouragement. I think we all have that need to explore and try new approaches. It's what fuels creativity. Many of my explorations have been failures - utterly and whole-heartedly - but that's what discovery is. You move on from the flops and keep the successes.

  6. Thank you, Yasha. I worry that perhaps I should have limited my palette more - maybe in future attempts. Nice to hear from you. :)

  11. I saw your most recent painting and thought wow! So rich and lush! Then I scrolled down and saw this one and my name! It's so exciting to see your exploration! You give me way too much credit but it's so great to know that what I'm doing resonates with a fellow artist. I'm really floundering at the moment, trying to integrate what I'm learning, pull it all together. You already do very good work and I know how uncomfortable it can be to keep pushing and look for more . . . Looking forward to following your journey!

  12. You definitely have been an inspiration, Lorraine, in your art and dedication. Beside your gift of art, you have a beautiful, clear way of expressing your thoughts in writing. Your posts have certainly guided me through many of my recent efforts. I appreciate your commitment to discovery.
